OUR HISTORY

 

In 1931 to 1943 Law Street Baptist Church began as the "Pure Light Baptist Church" until the congregation split into two group. In 1944 with only eight members a new edifice was built at 3132 Law Street and name the Law Street Baptist Church.

 

In that same year Rev. Eddie B. Scott, Sr. was elected as LSBC first pastor and he serve until death in 1978. During his time as pastor the church grew rapidly. The Rev. Joseph T. Benoit, Sr. was elected pastor in October 26, 1979 and serve until he resigned on May 4, 1995.

 

On April 14, 1996, Rev. Johnny R. Arvie was elected pastor of the Law Street Baptist Church. This preacher from Southwest Louisiana came in with the desire to heal our congregation after we had been through some difficult years. He encourage by teaching us that we can do all things through Christ which strengthens us.

 

*In 1948 The church was organized and built at 3132 Law Street.

 

* In 1948 an educational building was built.

 

*In 1965 Hurricane Betsy damaged our church and our records were lost.

 

* In 1974 two lot next to the church were purchased.

 

*In 1978 a new edifice was built at 3132 Law Street at our presence site.

 

* In 2002 we acquire the 501c-3 nonprofit organization. On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina flooded our church and city with 10 feet of water. The church building was totally loss and members were scattered throughout the country. Pastor Arvie while living in Waco, Texas sent letters for reunion service in Crowley, Louisiana in 2006.

 

In January of 2006, Pastor Arvie return to New Orleans. We were

able to have service in February 2006 at the Rising Star Baptist Church until November 2006 we return to our building while we renovated with the help of many new and old friends and family. Pastor said that the Lord told him the people would be happier if they went back home to 3132 Law Street as is.

 

After what we've been through our mission is still the same, to equip the saints, evangelize the sinners, and to provide a side haven for the broken hearted!
